The one where Saoirse tries to blog…

Hello! Is there anyone out there? Anyone at all? For those of you who accidentally stumbled upon this blog, I’m Sorry, eh I mean, I’m Saoirse! I’m a 20 year old Languages student currently trying to study Irish, German and Spanish. Three languages.. all at once? Pretty impressive you might say. That is unless you knew me and my below average ability in each of these languages. *Queue tiny violin playing Mozart’s Adagio in C Minor*

I grew up speaking Irish fairly regularly which was an absolute blessing in disguise (thank you parents). However, although I can speak it comfortably, my knowledge of Irish grammar (the tuiseals, the modhs and everything in between) is absolutely horrendous. Thankfully I’m surrounded by lecturers, tutors and friends who are wonderful Gaeilgeoirs (And all speak strange dialects I can’t understand).

When it comes to German, the grammar side of things is almost… dare I say… manageable? My secondary school teacher hammered those cases so hard into my head so I have her to thank for that (shout out to Mags if you’re reading). I can proudly say I actually know the difference between akkusativ action and dativ rest… I think… That said every other aspect (and I mean every. single. aspect.) of my German language learning career is a daily struggle.

When asked about Spanish I usually revert to my one trusty phrase/ the only thing I know how to say off by heart: como pollo el lunes” (and yes, I did have to check the spelling of every word in that sentence). In first year they told us that our results wouldn’t count towards our degree. What they didn’t tell us was that not going to tutorials or doing any work what so ever, would leave you with very limited Spanish going into second year. Who knew?

Anyway, that’s just a little taster of the sort of below average content you can expect from me throughout the next few weeks. Exciting isn’t it?

Slán go fóill,

Saoirse x
